Preface
Glass is a vessel for light, a tangible manifestation of the symbiotic relationship between temperature and temperament. Unlike the repetitious, restrained nature of cold-worked glass, cast glass begins with a high heat melting process that utilizes organic flow as its brushstrokes and ends with solidification over time. This method lends the icy material both a poetic softness and artistic tension, while eternally preserving its freest and purest moments.
The fusion of fire and sand lies at the heart of this artistic creation. Under temperatures exceeding a thousand degrees, rigid glass sheds the constraints of shape, metamorphosizing into a substance that stretches, merges, and spills freely.
Breaking free from the confines of fixed structures, the artists use molds as the skeleton, textures as the skin, and colors as the rhythm. In lieu of striving for perfect uniformity, the artists respect the medium’s natural current while safeguarding the unique traces left by glass as it melts, gushes, and cools: drifting cloudlike qualities, layered surfaces that shift in opacity, ethereal bubbles with varying densities, and ink-wash-like color diffusion. Every detail is a distinctive blueprint that showcases the dialogue between heat and material – irreplaceable and impossible to replicate.
This exhibition brings together diverse expressions of cast glass art, bridging traditional imagery and contemporary aesthetics. Some pieces capture the essence of Eastern negative space: presenting landscapes that embody meditative stillness with a clean and understated elegance, echoing the discipline and tranquility of Eastern sensibilities. Others deconstruct geometric forms, releasing abstract tension to interpret the avant-garde spirit and liberty of contemporary art through the binary collision of sheerness and depth, buoyancy and weight.
The artists traverse the boundaries of glass art, allowing substance, form, color, radiance, silhouette, and space to intersect and dance joyously. Incandescence and umbra are the soul of cast glass art. As light penetrates the translucent medium, colors dapple and scatter, shadows transform, and static pieces acquire a dynamic vitality, revealing a myriad of possibilities from day to night. Transparency and obscurity intertwine, solidity and emptiness coexist; the hard glass carries a soft realm of luminance and shade, so that each work is no longer immobile, but an immersive and empathetic ode to light and darkness.
Condensing a fleeting molten glimmer into form, this exhibition is a profound exploration of the inherent nature of glass. These works fuse traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art to unveil an artistic narrative on warmth, nature, light, shadow, and life.
Cast Glass: The Art of Kiln-Forming
Cast glass—also known as kiln-cast glass—is a creative process that relies on high-temperature kilns to transform solid glass raw materials into a liquid state through meticulous and complex procedures: mould shaping, glass frit melting, controlled annealing, and finally cooling into solid form. As one of the most expressive and conceptually profound techniques in glass art, cast glass carries forward a millennial craft heritage while radiating a distinctive aesthetic brilliance within the contemporary art context.
Step into the artistic world of cast glass, and witness the interplay and symbiosis between fire and material, technique and artistry, tradition and contemporaneity. The birth of every piece hinges on the artist's precise command of kiln temperatures, profound understanding of material properties, and relentless pursuit of process refinement. The naturally flowing veils, the ethereal bubbles, the warm and translucent textures—these are all unique imprints left by craft and the passage of time.

Artists adopt glass as their medium and kiln-casting as their bridge, channelling their expressions through: solid sculptural forms, geometric faceting, light refraction and translucency, surface textures and tactility, internal bubbles, layered laminations, chromatic and pattern compositions, contrasts between solidity and void, and the integration of diverse techniques. In doing so, they capture the traces of time and temperature, fusing their reflections on nature, meditations on life, and quest for beauty within the interplay of transparency and mass. Heat gives form; texture leaves its mark; colour conjures atmosphere; light bestows soul. Cast glass is at once sculpture, painting, and light installation—capable of bearing both traditional Eastern sensibilities and contemporary abstract conceptualism—making it an artistic medium of extraordinary inclusivity and distinctive material presence.
