1:00 Ink·Stone Series — Jing Li From Liuli China Museum

Viewing stones, also known as scholar’s stones due to their appreciation by the literati, are naturally occurring rocks that are removed from their original environment and placed atop meticulously carved pedestals. In this manner, they become artificial objects and bearers of specific ideals rather than truly natural forms.

Treating the scholar’s stone as a “cultural symbol”, the artist replicates them in glass, resin, and imitation diamonds imbued with strong industrial qualities and a futuristic temperament, to showcase both the continuation and conflict of traditional aesthetics in modern day society.

In this manner, the scholar’s rock transitions from a naturally occurring form to a cultural emblem, and both its significance and appearance gain new meaning and vivacity.
