He takes us on a journey through time and space until we are at the very beginning of the universe itself. Gold has long been symbolic of the divine, of immortality. During the Renaissance, when the study of alchemy was at its height, the utmost goal of alchemists was to turn common metals into gold. In turn, it was believed that gold held the key to the elixir of life. Bonte uses gold as a metaphor for discovery; for advancement.
